In light of ASEAN signing its charter this year which promises to include provisions for a mechanism to look into human rights issues in the region, it is important that Singaporeans play a more active role in shaping this process.

To do this, a group of us organised a public forum on 23 September 2007 at the Allson Hotel to encourage the Singaporean public to get involved. As a result, a group was formed where nearly 40 people signed up.

We have decided to call this group the ASEAN Charter Article 14 Project Group (ACAFPG).

ACAFPG is unique in the sense that it is the first and only group born out of consultation with members of the public in Singapore in order to advance human rights in ASEAN and Singapore.

To be sure, there are other groups that have been established to promote human rights. But the strength of ACAFPG lies in the fact that we are committed to making the group as inclusive as possible by involving and consulting Singaporeans in our work.

This will ensure the group remains diverse and that our efforts of promoting the fundamental liberties of Singaporeans are not hijacked and compromised by the powers that be.

Our primary objectives are to:

1. Engage Singaporeans on the ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism
2. Promote Human Rights Education
3. Advocate for the formation of a national human rights commission
4. Campaign for the ratification of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)

We have set up a working committee comprising of the following members to do the initial organisation:

1. Chia Ti Lik
2. Chong Kai Xiong
3. Ho Choon Hiong
4. Isrizal
5. M. Ravi
6. Ng E-Jay
7. Noora Zul
8. Seelan Palay
9. Shafi'ie

We hope that you will support our goals and aims. We will announce our future activities through this website. So please tell your friends and family about us, and join us in our activities.

Thank you.
